My latest obsession

By Ashok Soman
Geneva watchmaker Vacheron Constantin unveiled a major horological achievement at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie 2011, a watch that displays all 37 time zones in the world simultaneously.

Featuring a newly developed automatic mechanical movement, calibre 2460WT, Vacheron Constantin is now alone in being able to display time correctly everywhere on earth. With this, Vacheron Constantin triumphantly matches its own celebrated achievement in 1957 of having introduced the world’s first wristwatch with the world time complication.

How does one read the time on this watch? First of all, the single crown controls all time keeping functions, from the conventional hands of time and the 37-city disc to the day/night indicator (right in the center).

In the example of this picture, Geneva time has been selected, meaning it is 10.10am according to the central hands and the 24-hour display. Once this has been established, the watch indicat es that it is 5.10pm in Beijing, 2.40pm in New Delhi and 4.10am in New York.
