Derek Lam began his show notes with a quote from George Balanchine: “There are no new steps, only new combinations.” That's why he kept his main signatures but put them in a fresh, wearable way for Fall. He aimed to mix dissimilar fabrics perfectly this season like silky twills with heavy wools and rough waxed furs with supersoft cashmere. It's tricky to combine this fabrics,  but he definitely nailed it and had a very elegant result on the runway. Simple shapes and strong colors (grays, blues, and burgundies, mostly) were the two key words for his entire runway show.

Closing the show was a series of gorgeous lighter-than-air pleated gowns. Long, full, beautifully draped in the back, they were subtle but still made a statement. That's a reason why Lam's clothes translate so well to the sale floor. Lam may not be a name often heard on the red carpet for oscar shows, but expect these stunners to change that.
Understated elegance all the way!
