Japanese Vending Machine

TOKYO - For you sir, a canned coffee. And for madam, perhaps a nice cold tea.

A new Japanese canned drink vending machine uses facial recognition technology to "recommend" drinks based on the customer's age and gender -- and sales have tripled over those from regular vending machines as a result.

The machines, developed by JR East Water Business Co, a subsidiary of railway firm JR East Co, use large touch-panel screens with sensors that allow the machine to determine the characteristics of an approaching customer.

"Recommended" labels will then appear on specific drink products. Suggested products may also change depending on the temperature and time of day.

"If the customer is a man, the machine is likely to recommend a canned coffee drink, since men tend to prefer these. If the customer is in their 50s, though, that recommendation is likely to be green tea," a company spokeswoman said.

A woman in her 20s will be recommended a tea drink or slightly sweeter product, since market research has shown that they prefer these.

"We thought it would make it a lot more fun for the customers to have this kind of interaction with our machines, that it would improve the whole buying experience," she added.

The company has so far tested one machine at one Tokyo train station but plans to add five machines on Tuesday at central Tokyo Station, with the network to be expanded to other major Tokyo stations and nearby suburban areas by early in 2011.

Some 500 of the machines should be available in Tokyo and surrounding areas by March 2012.

Teens survived 50 days out in the sea

WELLINGTON — The rescue of three teenagers from the remote Pacific island of Tokelau, who survived on rainwater and a seagull while adrift for 50 days at sea, was hailed Friday as a "miracle".

The boys, who had resorted to sipping seawater when the rain stopped, would not have survived much longer, said Tai Fredricsen, the first mate on the New Zealand-based tuna vessel San Nikunau which found the trio.

"It's a miracle, it's a miracle," Tanu Filo, the father of one of the boys, Filo Filo, 15, told Radio New Zealand from Tokelau after learning the boys had been found off the coast of Fiji, 1,420 kilometres (920 miles) from Tokelau.

"The whole village, the whole village, they were so excited and cried and they sang songs and hugging each other, yeah, on the road. Every people and everybody was yelling and shouting the good news."

Filo Filo, and his friends Samuel Perez, 15, and Edward Nasau, 14, went missing in a small aluminium boat in early October and were presumed to have died after unsuccessful searches by the New Zealand air force.

The 500 people on their island of Atafu held memorial services for them.

Fredricsen was at the helm of the San Nikunau when he found the teenagers on Wednesday.

"It was a miracle we got to them," he told Fairfax Media.

"I pulled the vessel up as close as I could to them and asked them if they needed any help. They said 'very much so'. They were ecstatic to see us.

"They were very skinny, but physically in good health, compared to what they have been through."

Fredricsen said the boys had a couple of coconuts on board but no water.

"Somehow they caught a bird, I don't know how, but they caught it. They ate it, that is what is recommended.

"They were having little sips of seawater, which wouldn't have been a great idea, but they had only done it for the last couple of days."

The boys had "only days to survive," he said.

The trio have been transferred to a Fiji Navy patrol boat which was due to reach port Friday afternoon, where the trio were to be taken to hospital in Suva for a check-up.

Moral of the story: The case of The Queen v Dudley and Stevens (1884) is flawed. If two little boys can survive 50 days out in the sea, Why cant the 3 able bodied seamen do the same and why do they need to resort to cannibalism? Tsk tsk

I'm quite impressed with the advertising poster. As expected of the South Koreans, who are extremely creative when it comes to advertising and they definitely know how to attract the attention and cater to the taste of the fans.

The poster features the SHINee members sitting on a sofa side-bye-side with a myriad of expressions, donning outfits with different shades of colors in an art gallery setting.

Alber Elbaz loves to say that he designs for real women rather than fashion editors and models. This Lanvin Spring collection could be described as: strong, glamourous and with a subtle edge. It contains simple dresses for day, work suits, cocktail pieces, raincoats and ravishing evening wear. Colour played a major role, first in several shades of stone, then jewel tones of orange and ruby, and then finally, neon.

Karlie Kloss stole the show in a stunning orange dress. Elbaz also layered on the embellishment with pagan metalwork and we've seen metal bracelets that cuffed the shoes to the ankle which gives the outfits a certain edge.
